One of the last evenings I could not fall asleep and instead of turning around from side to side for a few hours, I grabbed the laptop and looked around a bit on
lyricwiki. Specifically I was looking for lyrics of Vökuró (a track from the 2004 album
Medúlla of Björk).
Found it, they have a decent selection there actually. But what caught my eye was an earlier album then the
Debut from 1993, namely
Gling-Gló. I must admit that I am not such a huge aficionado that I would have her bio-/discography memorised. So I read up at Wikipedia and the description sounded very interesting: Jazz. Björk? Alright. Need that. Now.
But where to get it from? At half past ten in the evening? Well, I guess that Apple thingie might have it, but then, I could not care less about it. However, there are other options out there. And in particular for Icelandic music there is a very good online shop:
Tónlist.is. I quickly had a look, they have it. Great, so just the need to sign up and then buy it (huh, the first time I buy music purely online, so far I always got the CDs). The signing up process was a bit tricky but after filling out everything I discovered that there is a switch to have the site in English (partially at least). Anyhow, it worked flawlessly.
They have the tracks in three formats, I downloaded them in AAC, which has the highest quality (320kbps). Unfortunately no Flac or Vorbis, but well, that would have been too good. It is possible to download each file up to five times, so if something goes wrong during the download you don't have to buy it again.
But anyhow, I digress. Plugging the new files into my music directory and running a database update,
mpd picked them up and I started listening.
Marvelous. This is so much fun to listen to a very jazzy Björk. Already the first track,
Gling-Gló lifts the mood. And it keeps getting better. All but two of the sixteen tracks are in Icelandic, which gives it a nice touch. Lyricwiki does a good job at providing the lyrics (big minus for tónlist, they do not include cover art in the downloads), but they are actually also available on the
official site.
Yeah, so I have been listening to that album quite a lot the last days and doesn't get boring. Those who only know Björk for her newer albums certainly might want to give this album a spin or two. A good song to get a feeling for the album would be track 3,
Kata Rokkar, though my favourite tracks are
Bella SÃmamær and
Brestir Og Brak.
