When Steffen did not post a new CGTalk review for quite a while, i decided to help out. It took me some time to look over nearly 4 month of CGTalk activity, so he finally beaten me to it with the 18th issue. But since he only covers May, i can still fill the void in between.
Because there were far too many pictures in my initial list, i chosen to keep only those, where i also liked other images from the authors portfolio. Hence the following links are to portfolios rather than to singular images.
3D Part.
An outstanding creature design. Kind of exception from my criterion, since the other pictures would probably not catch my attention, but this one is just too good to be left away.
Carlos Huante Creature (Avinash Hedge)
I especially like The Demon Guard, which can be seen in different stages, from concept sketch to the final render. The other characters are nice as well.
Julianna Kolakis
The poor guy looks kind of worried. There are many other impressive aliens to be found in the portfolio. Through this is the only one I would consider 'cute'.
Damien Canderle
Great urban environment with a huge amount of details. The Alpine Village also did catch my attention. There are other – through older – environments, that are very impressive as well.
Stefan Morell
I never heard about the movie mentioned, but i like the Uruh creature. The Medusa and the Demon Girl are nice as well. I would say Hannibal didn't turned out too well :S
Eddie Ellis
Not the usual sterile 3d look. The pictures look like they come from an old war movie and carry over a sense of motion and action. The downside is, that we do not get a clean view of the models
Nathan Carlisle
Many great characters.
Soa Lee
A Lightning Bug Character. Five different views of a cute little robot.
Robert Henry
Idyllic environments created with Vue. They have some "render-look" but are still nice.
Dominic Davison
2D Part.
The 2D part shall start with a strange creature as well. It reminds me of the Alien from the Alien-Movies. Seems to be far more sociable however :D
Jose Fernando
Another great picture of Marta Dahlig. And since her pictures were in more than one of Steffen's issues as well, we clearly concur in our opinion on her Art.
Marta Dahlig
A hilarious idea. Also quite funny is "The First line of Defence". Many more interesting creatures are waiting to be found in the portfolio.
Bobby Chiu
Judging by the shadow it is not quite clear who got whom there. The newspaper reading monster was in the 17th issue already.
Ramon Acedo
A couple of Dwarfs vs. the Guardian of the Mountains. They are of course not fleeing – dwarfs do not do such a thing. They are just relocating the frontline.
Sandro Nunes
A Sea Demon shares this portfolio with a quite angry Yeti. Not the best neighbourhood i guess, but the pictures are great.
Brian Smith
A couple of warriors and a big something marching to a battle. I also like "No way out" and the thoughtfully "Stone Golem".
Kris Eggleston
A big Dwelling-Tree, a Dragon, the Witchking and many nice characters are in Kirsi Salonen's portfolio.
Kirsi Salonen
A bunch of angry robots rampaging through a town. The older pictures "Storyteller" and the "Pirates Tavern" have a different theme but are similar in the nice choice of colours.
Georgi Markov
The Druid circle already made it in Steffen's 18th issue. The other pictures in the portfolio feature similar colours and nice lightning.
Herve Leblan
An old port town. The scaling seems to be a bit off in some parts – i believe the ships and the aqueduct are too huge. But the overall mood of the picture is great. Also take a look at the "Big Church", if you like the port.
Xiang Ling
A high Elf wearing what seems to be contemporary clothing. The portfolio is full of beautiful character pictures including Cpt. Jack Sparrow and Laguz the Seaserpent.
