Updates and RSS readers
I was doing a lot of updating the last few hours. First some things on the laptop were bumped up to current versions, this time the Vim update worked without blowing up, so I am now running 7.0.188 instead of 7.0.066, what a difference. Also I finally recompiled xchat so that it links to a current libcrypto: 0.9.8d instead of 0.9.7f. And while I was on it, OpenSSH and GnuPG were brought up to speed.
Then I started to look once again for a usable RSS reader. I had an extension for firefox once, which was extremely crappy. But nonetheless I poured a bit around on the extension site and found Wizz. It looks nice, it works, but I absolutely do not like using the browser sidebar, this chunky blob completely destroys the Zen of my desktop. So after playing around with it for a short while, I de-installed it. Maybe another time.

Interestingly, besides Firefox extensions there are very few RSS readers for Linux which appeal to me. Basically it is only liferea, but it does not work without at least some Gnome stuff. I stopped trying to compile it when I saw that it requires GConf, no thanks. So I guess I stick to snownews which somewhat works; maybe I will really sit down on night and figure out how to configure that properly.
But finally I came around updating Serendipity to a more current version. The blog was running version 1.0.1 happily for the last months, but now it is up to 1.1. Updating s9y is refreshingly easy, basically it is just unpacking the tarball of the new version on top of the old one; then a click in the administration part and it is set. And what is new in 1.1? The only thing that really caught my eye is the enhanced plug-in listing which uses advanced JavaScript and is wasting a lot of space on the screen. The first thing is cool, it is now possible to shuffle the different plug-ins via drag and drop. The second thing is slightly annoying, but well, I will get used to it. Really nice is the feature to list only new versions of installed plug-ins.

I use Yarssr. It does exactly what I want and doesn't annoy me. Possible drawback for you, but I like it: it lives in the "message pane" (of gnome, in my case)... No idea about how it works in FWHM :D, err... FVWM, ok ok...
I looks tiny and unannoying. But it requires Gnome unfortunately. Well, maybe I'll one day cave in and start using some huge desktop thing again. But FWHM isn't that bad actually: FVWM does provide the full width at only half the ressources ;-)
